Traffic violation leads to cocaine bust

The City’s Metro Police officers confiscated cocaine with an estimated street value of R35 000 after a high-speed chase in Brackenfell yesterday, Sunday, 18 May. The driver was one of 310 people arrested over the past week, for various violations.
At around 16:00, officers attached to the K9 Unit saw a motorist disobey a traffic sign on Brackenfell Boulevard, but the driver refused to stop, resulting in a high-speed chase.
The vehicle was eventually stopped and the driver jumped out and fled.
During the chase, the suspect dropped a bag containing cocaine. He was caught shortly after and tried to bribe the officers with R6 860 cash found in his car.
The 45-year-old was arrested for the possession of cocaine, bribery, and resisting arrest and was detained at Brackenfell SAPS.
‘Every week our officers confiscate a smorgasbord of illicit drugs which otherwise would have ended up in our communities. Drugs are a financial resource for gangs and fuel their activities, violence, growth and power. It is easy money for them, but it leaves behind devastation as families struggle with loved ones who are addicted. While the City provides services such as Matrix clinics to help combat abuse, the more drugs we get off the street, the more likely it is we save a life or prevent someone from becoming addicted,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In addition, Metro Police officers confiscated two illegal firearms in two days in Hanover Park. Two suspects, aged 32 and 25 were detained at Philippi SAPS.
Since January, City enforcement agencies have confiscated 46 firearms and 300 rounds of ammunition from a number of communities including Hanover Park, Manenberg, Nyanga and Lavender Hill.
‘This may seem like a drop in the ocean of weapons that are flooding our streets and tearing communities apart. Every weapon confiscated is one less that can be used to commit a crime or take a life. We remain committed to the safety of all our residents,’ added Alderman Smith.
The three enforcement departments made 310 arrests in the past week and issued 25 696 fines for various transgressions.
Cape Town Traffic Officers made 29 arrests - 27 for driving under the influence of alcohol, two for reckless and negligent driving.
Officers also recorded 23 352 offences, impounded 198 public transport vehicles and executed 789 warrants of arrest.
Law enforcement officers made 236 arrests and issued 6 186 fines.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre logged 1 700 incidents this past weekend. These included 109 reports of assault, 54 motor vehicle and pedestrian vehicle accidents and 53 incidents of domestic violence.
Residents are reminded to report criminal activity by phoning the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone and 107 from a landline.
